Valentino Rossi Cleared to Race at Mugello

Valentino Rossi has been declared fit enough to compete in this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Mugello.

The Movistar Yamaha rider was injured in a motocross training accident at Cross Club Cavallara in Mondavio, Italy, on May 25. Rossi was examined at a hospital suffering pain in his chest and abdomen. Doctors determined Rossi had lesions on his liver and kidney but the injuries did not develop into further complications.

At Mugello today, Rossi underwent a medical check-up and was ruled able to compete by the FIM’s Medical Director, Dr. Giancarlo Di Filippo, the track’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Remo Barbagli and MotoGP Medical Director, Dr. Angel Charte.

Besides being at Rossi’s home track, the Mugello round is important for Rossi’s championship aspirations. After starting the season with three podiums, Rossi finished 10th in Jerez and crashed out at Le Mans, dropping him to third overall. Rossi needs to regain some momentum and a strong performance at Mugello would certainly help. That being said, being medically cleared to race is one thing; being strong enough to win what may be a challenging race is another.
