Nougat usage continues to grow in Google’s Android distribution stats

Last month we saw solid growth for Nougat usage in Google’s Android distribution numbers, and that’s the same story this month.

Google’s latest Android distribution report reveals how much each version of Android was used to access the Play Store during the 7-day period ending on April 3. When it comes to Nougat, versions 7.0 and 7.1 combined for 4.9 percent. That’s a healthy jump from last month when Nougat usage was at 2.8 percent.

Usage of other versions of Android fell from last month. Android 6.0 Marshmallow dropped from 31.3 percent in March to 31.2 percent in April, while Android Lollipop (5.0 and 5.1) fell from 32.5 percent in March to 32.0 percent in April.

Getting into the pre-5.0 versions of Android, version 4.4 KitKat slipped from 20.8 percent in March to 20 percent in April and Jelly Bean (4.1-4.3) fell from 10.6 percent last month to 10.1 percent this month. And then there’s Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.3-4.0.4) and Gingerbread (2.3.3-2.3.7), both of which finished at 0.9 percent, marking the first time that usage of either version has fallen below 1.0 percent.

There aren’t any huge changes in Google’s latest Android distribution report, but it is good to see Nougat usage grow a healthy amount. We’re seeing Nougat updates for existing phones continuing to roll out lately, and there are some major new releases with Nougat preloaded on the horizon, so hopefully it won’t be too long before we see Nougat usage hit 10 percent.
