Android Auto – Lexus & Toyota Have No Plans For Support

Android Auto is available on hundreds of vehicles already, but there are still quite a few car makers that have not added Android Auto to their vehicles just yet. Two of those manufacturers are Lexus and Toyota. Recently, Cars.com reached out to both manufacturers – and other car makers that haven’t announced Android Auto support yet – to find out what the deal is. And Toyota and Lexus were two of the more interesting responses, stating that they have no plans for Android Auto. Now Toyota, we had already known they wouldn’t be supporting Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, they made that known from the very beginning. But Lexus has been quite on just about everything, in regards to Android Auto, until now.

Lexus has never been a part of Google’s Open Automotive Alliance, so it’s not that surprising that they aren’t planning to support Android Auto. But it is a bummer for Lexus owners that were waiting for Android Auto support. Lexus hasn’t elaborated on why they aren’t looking to support Android Auto or even Apple CarPlay, so we’re left with speculating the reasoning behind it. We know that with Toyota, they want to keep Google and Apple out, they feel that giving those two tech companies access to their car’s system, would be like giving the keys to their competitor. Since both companies are working on their own autonomous cars right now.

Android Auto is coming to a slew of vehicles already, with many more on the horizon. But it looks like those with Toyota and Lexus vehicles will be waiting far longer, unfortunately. There are still quite a few car makers that need to add Android Auto and/or Apple CarPlay to their vehicles, and auto makers like Jeep, Jaguar, BMW and others are working on it. Tesla, is another name that is on the list of “probably not” however. Which is a bit sad, considering how popular Tesla is for the tech world right now. The good thing though, is that Android Auto isn’t needed to be able to use Android Auto in your car, since you can just mount your phone and have the same experience (although on a smaller screen).
