Staycations don’t get much better than the award-winning Eagle Brae log cabins, these cosy retreats are nothing short of paradise and come complete with a wood burner and French doors that open out to miles of untouched Scottish wilderness.

Each cabin at Eagle Brae was hand-built by master craftsmen using traditional Norwegian techniques, the gigantic logs are Canadian red cedar, sourced from sustainable forests in British Columbia. Each roof is covered with a layer of turf to help insulate the cabins and to help them blend into their rural landscape. It feels like a fairytale as you drive back to your cabin to see smoke puffing from the chimney, grass sprouting from the roof and semi-tame local deer pottering around.

The carefully considered interiors are decked out with artwork by local artists, sporting paraphernalia, Scottish tartan and wooden furnishings that were carved in the Himalayas. There’s a TV, DVDs and Wi-Fi if you’re not completely ready to disconnect, but if you’re craving peace and quiet, the only sound you’ll hear is the wind, wood crackling in the fire or the occasional passing owl.

Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle can be easily reached on a day trip. Plodda Falls – a 150ft high waterfall with a viewing platform not for the faint hearted – is beautiful and also a short drive away, as is the wild and incredible picturesque Glen Affric.
