2015 Porsche 911

2015 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Coupe

Pros: Impeccable build quality; surgically precise driving experience; broad range of model offerings and options

Cons: Steep prices skyrocket even higher as options are added; cozy, low-slung cockpit can make entry and exit difficult; road noise

CG Says: The Porsche 911 lineup grows for 2015 with the addition of GTS models. Available in coupe or cabriolet form (and with or without all-wheel drive), the GTS comes standard with 430 horsepower and various high-performance upgrades. It slots between the S models and the race-track-focused GT3. In any of its many forms, the Porsche 911 is an absolutely thrilling car to drive. Precise handling, exceptional craftsmanship, and intoxicating engines are all hallmarks. Unfortunately, so are stratospheric prices. Few automobiles of any stripe, though, can blend daily-driver livability and supercar handling the way the 911 can.

Lenovo restructures to stay competitive, Rick Osterloh departs

motorola_logo_2015_lenovo_company

Lenovo is making some big moves upfront in order to stay competitive in the tech industry.

The biggest headliner has to do with Motorola Mobility’s Rick Osterloh, who has decided to depart from the company. Lenovo wished him the best and mentioned that his leadership will result in continued success in the future. Lenovo highly appreciates the work he has done since the official acquisition. Following his departure, De Lencquesaing will become the new Chairman and President of Motorola. This could be the end of the road for Motorola as we know it. It’ll be interesting to see how Moto’s next flagship smartphone turns out, if we see it.

Lenovo’s PC and Smart Device Business Group will now be in charge of all PC’s, tablets, virtual reality, and smart home products. This group will be under the control of Gianfranco Lanci, who is the current president and Chief Operating Officer of Lenovo. Lenovo’s Mobile Business Group will be in charge of everything smartphone related. Chen Xudong will be in charge of this sector.

Lenovo believes it’s now or never, and wants to get back on top of things when it comes to smartphones, which have experienced a recent slip due to high competition. Chen Xudong said that most of the focus will be on China and facing off rivals like Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi.

All these changes will go into effect on April 1st.

CEO and Chairman of Lenovo Yang Yuanqing concluded with the following statement:

“In the last year, Lenovo has delivered solid results, the fast integration of Motorola and System x businesses, and a series of innovative product launches across our portfolio.  Now we must further accelerate our transformation into a customer-centric company. The changes announced today will build on our successes, rapidly deliver this transformation and ultimately drive Lenovo into a new phase of growth.”

Best Buy taking LG G5 pre-orders, T-Mobile sales start March 29

lg_g5_official_tiles

Although a number of carriers and retailers signed on to offer the LG G5, most of them still haven’t said when you’ll actually be able to buy the Korean company’s new flagship. The G5, despite being announced the same day as Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, doesn’t have a specific release date almost one month after going public. But we’re finally getting an idea of when the G5 should be sold here in the United States.

LG told us last week that the phone would be released in “early April.” Then, just yesterday, U.S. Cellular stepped forward to say pre-orders will open on March 26 with a release date scheduled for April 1. And today two others are clarifying G5 availability.

Best Buy and T-Mobile are readying the G5 for that April 1 release date.

lg_g5_design_dark

Right now, Best Buy is accepting pre-orders for the G5; however, you’ll need to be an AT&T or Sprint customers. Verizon’s variant of the G5, for whatever reason, won’t be available for pre-order through the electronics retailer until March 24. AT&T’s variant with 32GB of internal storage is priced at $22.97 per month on AT&T Next while Sprint’s price $199 on a two-year contract. But Best Buy is temporarily taking $100 off of the Sprint variant’s price, making the current price tag read $99.

The off-contract prices at Best Buy for the AT&T and Sprint variants are $999 and $799, respectively. Best Buy is also running a promotion where the electronics retailer will throw in a free bundle valued at $90. The bundle includes a free extra battery and charging cradle as well as a USB Type-C-to-micro-USB adapter.

t-mobile_logo_gs6_boot

T-Mobile will begin accepting orders online on March 29, two days before the national launch in stores on April 1. Getting the G5 through Team Mobile will cost $629 without a contract, but splitting the cost into twenty-four payments makes the phone available for $26.25 per month.

A similar bundle as the one offered by Best Buy will be active at T-Mobile. The carrier is throwing in a free extra battery and charging cradle with purchases made before April 17. The real good promotion, however, is worth $200. T-Mobile will give anyone who buys the G5 by April 5 a free LG 360 Cam while supplies last. So there’s a chance you could walk away with $280 worth of freebies with your new G5.

Mercedes swaps crew personnel for Rosberg and Hamilton

In a move that is expected to help the team, Mercedes has swapped around several members of its drivers’ crew personnel.

Nico Rosberg for Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 at the 2016 Australian GPThere are several differences between the Silver Arrow cars this season. The decision was made by the team to swap number one mechanics for 2016. New personnel turnover also paved the way for other swaps. There are no changes to the engineering personnel, however.

Nico Rosberg praised the moves, saying that it can only help both drivers. “It’s good for the wider strength of the team to move people around and not have them become focused on a single car or driver,” said the German, who has come in second to Lewis Hamilton in each of the past two seasons.

A spokesman for the team said that the main driver was not the one who came up with the idea for the changes; this decision was not made to appease any one person (Rosberg, mainly, in this scenario). The moves are just a way for the team to keep its edge by making sure things are kept fresh.

“You don’t want people doing the same thing for 15 years,” said the spokesman.

Well, the only same thing the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team wants to do for many years is to win, and this move not only seems to have made Rosberg happy, but could be key to retaining the level of success the team has had in recent years.

Best icon packs [2016]

nexus_9_screenshot_with_moonshine_icon_pack_and_action_launcher_3

What are the best icon packs? That’s a hard question to answer, largely because there are just so many available. Tons of highly skilled designers offer premium icon packs, and it’s hard to cover them all in one article. We’ve covered some really greats ones in the past. Simply 8-Bit was an enjoyable and nostalgic style from the graphics of the late 80s and the Moonshine icon pack is a fan-favorite because of its gorgeous Material Design style. Those aren’t the only great icon packs out there, as there are plenty of little-known options out there.

In fact, there are a few little known options that have made some great waves in recent months, and we’re going to show you what they’re all about.

One of the best things about icon packs is that they you don’t have to go through the long and daunting process of flashing a new ROM every time you want a new style on your smartphone or tablet. They’re actually quite easy to install, and we’ve got some quick instructions on how to get an icon pack loaded on your smartphone and/or tablet at the end of the article below!

Be sure to follow along after the break!

Material Cards

material-cards-icon-pack

Material Cards has been my favorite icon pack as of late, largely because of its unified “card” style that still takes cues from Google’s Material Design guidelines. Not only are they colorful and flat, but they also take on a neat use of shadows. One of the best parts of this icon pack is that they’re all the same size, giving off a more “organized” feel in comparison to other icon packs.

There are a couple of downsides with Material Cards, and the major one is that there’s only 640 icons in this pack. Normally we see thousands of icons available in an icon pack, but with Material Cards being an up and comer, its small arsenal is understandable. This icon pack does have a set of wallpapers that takes on that “flat” style, but many of these wallpapers are the backs of popular smartphones, which really doesn’t fit with the rest of the icon pack, in my opinion.

Either way, give Material Cards a try! You won’t regret it.

Glim

glim-icon-pack

Glim is another neat icon pack with a flat style. It doesn’t take on that card-like style that Material Cards has, but the icons are flat and feature a very nice color palette. It may look pretty standard as far as icon packs go, but it actually has some other neat features with it. One of those is the ability to alternate colors based on the style you have in mind.

Not only that, but this icon pack features a whopping 2500 icons as well as a ton of cloud-based wallpapers to boot. The pack does cost $2.79 on the Play Store, but it’s entirely worth it with the value you get. If it doesn’t support a certain icon, Glim has a smart icon request tool, allowing you to put in a request for any icons that might not be supported.

Moonshine

moonshine-icon-pack

We featured this icon pack when we first started doing our monthly roundup of the best icon packs, but it’s so worth including again. The Moonshine icon pack is a fan favorite, not only here at Talk Android, but with many others, too. The almost 80,000 great reviews and over 1,000,000 downloads speak for themselves!

The Moonshine icons are unique and look stunningly gorgeous. It has a very sexy, flat, and “free form” look going on. There’s an icon for just about all of the popular applications out there. Unfortunately, there’s only a little over 900 icons available, as opposed to the thousands many other icon packs feature.

As per the norm, Moonshine comes with a ton of awesome cloud-based wallpapers and supports all of the usual launchers out there. It’s definitely worth the download!

Play Store Download Link

IMMATERIALIS

immaterialis-icon-pack

IMMATERIALIS is probably the most unique icon pack on this list. Installing it will transform your icons into squares, which you might be familiar with if you’ve had a square-style icon pack before. However, it features a unique color palette, one that you might not be used to. But, on one hand, I found it kind of neat. It’s almost liked a “toned down” color palette. Aside from the design, the impressive part of IMMATERIALIS is that it has a whopping 3,000+ icons, meaning there’s a themed icon for almost any application on your smartphone.

It also has 89 HD wallpapers, icon masking for those pesky icons that aren’t supported, and, of course, the signature icon request tool.

Play Store Download Link

Urmun

urmun-icon-pack

Urmun is a neat icon pack due to the amount of detail that was put into it. Each icon follows Google’s Material Design guidelines, has a neat use of shadow, and each icon has a “shapeless” design. If I had one word to describe Urmun, it would be “eye-pleasing,” as the developer notes in the description. The unique use of colors, shadows, and shapes really makes this icon pack.

One of the best things about this icon pack is that it has an active developer. Urmun is frequently updated with new icons. In fact, an additional 17 were just added the other day, bringing Urmun’s arsenal to a total of 3610+ high definition icons. There’s also a handful of alternative colors, a dynamic calendar, a clock widget, and a promise of weekly updates. Use the icon request tool, and you might just see your requested icon appear in the next few weeks!

Play Store Download Link

Closing

And that wraps up our monthly iteration of the best icon packs! There are so many different options available on Android, whether you’re looking for something more old-style or even an icon pack that has a more modern feel to it. What makes a really good icon pack, though? It’s not just the style that makes a good icon pack, but the whole package.

A good icon pack has that aforementioned great and highly detailed style, a large variety of icons, wallpapers that match the style of the icon pack, and most of all, great developer support. We’ve tried to highlight only the icons that have all of these characteristics, and we truly hope you enjoy them.
Do you have a favorite icon pack? Let us know what it is in the comments below and we might just feature it in next month’s article!

Installation Process

Installing an icon pack is an easy task. In some cases, you can download an icon pack and it’ll work with the stock launcher. But, in most cases, you’ll need an alternative launcher like the Nova Launcher or Action Launcher.

If you’re using Action Launcher, once you have an icon pack downloaded, open the Action Launcher settings menu. Once there, head into Display > Icon Pack. Select “Icon Pack” and then you can choose from a list of icon packs you have downloaded on your Android device. The process is similar for Nova Launcher.

As you can see, it’s a quick and easy setup, but for a more detailed tutorial, you can click here.

Closing

And that wraps up our top icon picks for the month! Keep in mind that while the Play Store is full of great icon packs, there are plenty more exclusively available on the XDA Forums. On top of that, most icon packs on the XDA Forums are free, though there’s often a suggested donation to help support their work.

What was your favorite icon pack from this past month?

2015 Infiniti QX80

2015 Infiniti QX80 Limited

Pros: Brisk acceleration for the size; composed, absorbent ride; classy interior materials and fine assembly quality

Cons: Fuel economy; some desirable features are restricted to expensive option packages; mediocre visibility; maneuverability

CG Says: For 2015, Infiniti’s plus-size SUV gets a new front fascia and grille, updated interior trim, a special-edition Limited Package, and three new safety features: Forward Emergency Braking, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, and High Beam Assist. This high-content heavyweight impresses for its surprisingly brisk acceleration, high mechanical refinement, adept ride, and spacious, tasteful, high-quality interior. The main downsides are the trade-offs in fuel economy and maneuverability that go with big SUVs, plus blatant Ponzi-scheme options-package availability that undercuts attractive starting prices (though rival premium brands are guilty of this too). Still, the QX80 is a very likable and capable premium-large SUV that deserves consideration, especially by those who might occasionally dare venture off-road. Just think twice about the overpriced Deluxe Technology Package with its overabundance of wearisome warning noises and winking lights.

Toyota 86 gets a fresh new face and some performance upgrades

It’s hard to believe that the Toyota 86, also known as the GT86 in some parts of the world, is now four years old, which means it’s about time for give it a new face. The updated model is set to receive a mildly revised exterior look and the long anticipated performance boost.

Externally, the 86 gets a new front bumper, a larger central air intake, revised LED headlights and tail lamps as well as a new 10-spoke alloy wheels. Its cabin gets new leather and Alcantara upholstery which includes soft-touch suede on the door trims. The 86 also receives a new steering design, integrating audio controls and an iconic ’86’ logo in the middle.2016-Toyota-GT86-8

2016-Toyota-GT86-6 2016-Toyota-GT86-4

While the aesthetic department stirs excitement, the same cannot be said about its performance because the only variant to receive a boost is the six-speeder manual. The 86 is powered by the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder horizontally opposed engine, and in the manual it makes just 5 additional horses at 205 hp and 214 Nm. The automatic variant settles for the existing output of 200 hp and 205 Nm of torque.

It’s a known fact that the 86 isn’t built for straight-line fun, but widely regarded as one of the best entry-level, pure-bred sports car. With this facelift, the engineers have taken its handling and agility up a notch by revising the chassis setup and tweaked the damper and spring rates.2016-Toyota-GT86-3

The updated 86 will make its debut in the upcoming New York Motor Show and will be ready for delivery by Q4 2016. Also, since the demise of Scion in the United States, all existing FR-S models will be rebranded as the Toyota 86.

Back at home, the 86 made a brief appearance through UMW Toyota in 2012 with the manual variant being sold for RM243,000, whereas the automatic costed RM6,000 more. For now, UMW Toyota is only offering the 86 on a special order basis.

Android N Developer Preview update is now available

android_n_logo_closeup_TA

Google just posted the factory images for an updated developer preview of Android N. The update has also begun rolling out to those already on Android N via OTA.

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P have updated build NPC56W. The Nexus 9 Wi-Fi and LTE are being updated to build NPC56X. As you can imagine, the update comes in at a very small size and will install rather quickly via the OTA. If you’re installing Android N for the first time, it’s a bit more of a process, but luckily for you we have a step-by-step guide on how to flash system images. However, we recommend signing up for Google’s Android Beta Program because there’s no harm to your data.

The updated developer preview is said to include lots of bug fixes and small patches ultimately fixing problems in the first iteration developer preview. To enroll in the beta program or download the new factory images, hit the link below. We’ll have more coverage coming your way over the next few days as we take a more in-depth look at the updated beta.

The Season Begins; Qatar MotoGP First Practice Here we go! From here on it counts.

2016 MotoGP Riders before Qatar practice Holy Toledo! What’s happening? In MotoGP Qatar FP1, at the opening event of 2016, the quickest Honda is that of Dani Pedrosa, 7th quickest, with Marc Marquez right behind him in 8th. Up front are the two Yamahas of World Champion Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi, followed by the Ducatis of Andrea Iannone and Hector Barbera, with Maverick VInales on Suzuki, 5th, and Pol Espargaro on Yamaha, 6th. Jorge Lorenzo Qatar practice test action Lorenzo’s time of 1:55.440 is 8/10 of a second quicker than that of Marquez. We know that Marquez goes to the top if he can, so what’s going on? One possibility is a set-up mistake, which Honda could put right in the next practice. But this would be unlike a top team, all of which have procedures in place to prevent this kind of waste of precious practice time. What else? Even after his improved laps at the very end of the recent Qatar pre-season test, Marquez had said, “The bike is not right,” or words to that effect.
