Spyware allegedly found on brand new devices around the world

Security research firm Kryptowire reports that it has found a form of spyware called Adups on many devices sold across the world. This spyware collects data, like SMS logs, call logs, contacts, IP addresses, IMEIs, and more, and sends it to specific servers in China without the user’s knowledge every 24 to 72 hours.

The company has not announced a list of affected devices, but it has mentioned the Blu R1 HD. If you own one, you might want to return it. Amazon seems to be offering refunds to some people.

The company that created this software is called Shanghai Adups Technology, which provides over-the-air software delivery services to many companies in many industries.

While the report has not been confirmed by a third-party, it’s still something to be concerned about. This Adups spyware is quite a bit worse than Carrier IQ! If you want to check if your device is affected, you can look for the APKs “com.adups.fota” and “com.adups.fota.sysoper” on your device. Let us know what you think in the comments!
