As we expected after uncovering trademark filings earlier this month, Erik Buell Racing will debut a new model called the Black Lightning at the Long Beach International Motorcycle Show. Based on the EBR 1190SX, the Black Lightning offers more upright ergonomics and higher torque delivery for urban riding.
Visually, the Black Lightning looks like a blacked-out version of the 1190SX. The engine is the same 1190cc V-Twin, claiming 185 hp, but EBR revised the gearing to provide more practical torque for street use.
The seat height and footpegs are lower than on the 1190SX while the handlebars are higher, creating a more upright riding position. EBR says it will also offer an optional comfort seat as well.
“When you combine the upright seating with intense acceleration, you have the ultimate all around superbike,” says Erik Buell. “It has striking looks and performance for urban riders, and yet it is comfortable for a long day of riding or sport touring.”.
The Black Lightning is the first motorcycle announced since EBR was acquired by Liquid Asset Partners LLC, and the new owners say there is more on the way including a new sub-$10,000 platform for 2018.
“With this new model, an improved capital structure, and additional models in development, it is an exciting time at EBR Motorcycles,” says Bill Melvin, EBR’s chief financial officer.
EBR will present the 1190 Black Lightning on Nov. 18 at the Long Beach show with a Facebook Live presentation streaming at 4 pm PST.
