 Answers:

Orange and white made their first appearance as school colors in 1885. Two Texas fans on their way to a baseball game stopped at general store to buy some ribbons for the crowd. The shopkeeper happened to have more orange and white ribbons in stock than any other color, so he sold the fans orange and white ribbons. Shortly after, the stands were filled with orange and white. The colors were officially adopted as the school colors in 1900.

The name “Bevo” was first announced in the December 1916 issue of UT’s alumni magazine. Bevo 1 made his debut the month before at the UT-Texas and A&M football game.

Big Bertha, the largest bass drum in the world, is an essential part of the Longhorn band. The famous drum was built in 1922, weighs more than 500 pounds, and measures eight feet in diameter.

The Austin Tower was first lit during the 1937 football season. As part of the ongoing Longhorn tradition, the top of UT at Austin Tower turns orange to celebrate regular-season football victories.

Smokey the Cannon was built in 1953 by the  UT’s mechanical engineering laboratory in response to the traditional shotgun blasts heard at the Texas-Oklahoma football games. Smokey is fired every time the Longhorns score a touchdown.

The Hook ‘em Horns hand signal was introduced in 1995 during a pep rally by head cheerleader Harley Clark, Jr. Hook ‘em Horns was named the top college hand sign by Sports Illustrated.
