Growing up, I had pretty low self-esteem and was constantly fearful of what others thought of me. Over the years though, I have become more and more comfortable in my own skin. It's not something that just happened by itself though - confidence is something that you grow and nurture, like a plant. BIC® Soleil Shine® is all about how you can make your own sun and that's why I'm teaming up with them to share the 5 routines I regularly practice to help build my self-confidence.

READING UPLIFTING BOOKS

One of my favorite ways to build confidence is by reading books that are uplifting and full of tips on how to better oneself. These types of reads always put me in a better mood, and remind me that I am capable of achieving my goals and being the awesome rockstar I know I am inside. I try to read something encouraging at least once a month, so that I'm regularly being reminded of good things and inspired by extraordinary people.

HELPING OTHERS

Something that I've learned over the past year is that by helping others, you're also helping yourself. If I'm having a bad day, I try to do something that can better someone else's. It can be as simple as giving someone a compliment or reaching out to someone in need. Just seeing their sadness turn into joy will make you light up inside, and is a great reminder that you matter and can make a positive change in the world.

TAKING "ME" TIME

Regularly taking some time to "treat yo' self" is so incredibly important. By caring for ourselves, we're saying "You matter, and I love you", which is crucial in a society that teaches women to tear themselves down. I love taking a few hours during the weekend to pamper myself, take a bubble bath, and paint my nails a new color. I also like to reward myself when I've achieved a goal or been working extra hard by treating myself to something special, like a new lipstick or some free time to play video games. Self-care plays a huge role in how we feel about ourselves and how confident we are in our own skin.

FOCUSING ON THE GOOD

I try to be as positive as possible, and am always looking for the good in every situation. Before, I used to pick apart my reflection and dwell on my imperfections, but now I make sure to only focus on what I love about myself. Doing this makes "loving myself" something that feels completely natural, without any struggle with body image or insecurities. I also do this with every aspect of my life - work, relationships, mental health, etc. The more you work at being positive, the easier it will get to realize that there are good things all around you!

STEPPING OUTSIDE OF MY COMFORT ZONE

A result of my low self-esteem is that it made me incredibly shy. I actually used to have anxiety about going out and being around a bunch of people I didn't know, but it's something I've begun to overcome this year. The biggest thing to help battle my shyness? Regularly (and frequently) pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I signed up to volunteer my time every Sunday as a door greeter. I strike up conversations with strangers that I meet out in public, and don't stress myself out over trying to say the perfect things. I'm putting myself out there in an attempt to be more present in my everyday life, and as a result, have met some of the kindest people ever. As I've accomplished scary thing after scary thing, I've become more confident in myself and am gaining a growing excitement for life.
