Hemmings Find of the Day – 1936 Ford Model 68 five-window coupe

1936 Ford five-window coupe

Aside from the wide whites and chrome wheels, this 1936 Ford Model 68 five-window coupe, for sale on Hemmings.com, could pass for a carefully preserved stock example. Dig a little deeper, however, and the truth is revealed: This under-the-radar Ford is really a tastefully executed hot rod. In place of the original 221-cu.in. flathead V-8, someone has substituted a 239-cu.in. flathead V-8 from a ’46 Ford, delivering a gain of at least 15 horsepower. An electric fuel pump is used to feed the beast, and hydraulic brakes provide more sure-footed stops (with less effort) than the cable brakes the car wore from the factory. It appears as if the interior (and the rumble seat) could use some upholstery work, but otherwise this appears to be a cruise-night-ready driver. From the seller’s description:

1936 Ford 5-window coupe with rumble seat, and roll-down back window with continental kit. I have owned this car since 1986 and used it as a Sunday car. It runs well and has juice brakes, electric fuel pump, and 1946 block flathead stocker. The dash and window panels have been custom painted and has a black lacquer paint job. I also have the original brake parts and hubcaps that go with it!
