Sometimes you wish you could get a piece of software on a piece of hardware that’s not traditionally meant to run it. For some iPhone owners, putting Android on Apple’s hardware might seem like a great idea. Well, one developer and designer has made that dream a reality.
His name is Nick Lee, and he works for Tendigi, a mobile design and development company. Lee has put together a 3D-printed case which allows for an iPhone owner to get Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow running on it. Lee breaks down the process quite well right here, and you should check it out if you’re interested in how it all works. The short version is that Lee used the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) on a single-board computer, then embedded that computer in a 3D-printed case. The iPhone is then connected to the board via USB.
The case features a 650mAh battery to run the tiny computer, and the iPhone is running iOS 9.3.2. Putting the iPhone into the case, connecting it, and then running the Tendigi app will then launch the Android user interface. The touch responsiveness isn’t fantastic, and there are black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, but otherwise the experience is pretty solid.
Lee shrank the 3D-printed case quite a bit, and now it’s the size of a standard battery case. It even includes USB and HDMI ports and a microSD card slot, too.
