2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera Recalled for Clutch Issue

Ducati is recalling the 1199 Superleggera because of a problem with its clutch assembly that may cause the rear wheel to lock up. The recall campaign affects 168 units of the exclusive Superleggera in the U.S., all produced between April 8, 2014 and Nov. 13, 2014.

According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the damper plate assembly between the primary driven gear and the clutch basket assembly may break due to fatigue. If breakage occurs, the damper plate will fail and part of the assembly may be displaced, causing the engine to seize and locking the rear wheel.

Ducati first received notification of the problem in March 2016 when a Superleggera in the U.S. crashed on a track, with the rider sustaining injuries. Following the initial report, Ducati reviewed international warranty claims and found two other reports from Europe of broken damper plates. Fortunately, those incidents did not result in the rear wheel locking or a crash. Ducati conducted an analysis of the components and on May 9, initiated worldwide recall proceedings.

Dealers will replace the clutch assembly on recalled units. The new clutch assembly has a slightly-larger diameter damper plate.
