Summer Road Trip Checklist

School’s almost over, the weather is great – it’s road trip season! Unfortunately, nothing derails a road trip like unexpected car trouble.  Whether you’re planning a short vacation or an epic cross-country trek, it always pays to be prepared. Get your car ready and set yourself up for a smooth, hassle-free vacation with our essential summer road trip checklist.

Check Up On Maintenance

Get an oil change – if you’re getting close to the recommended mileage for an oil change, it’s smart to go ahead and get one before you leave. The same goes for other routine stuff like tire rotations  – if you’re behind schedule, catch up now! A full-service oil change also gives us a chance to top off your other fluids and inspect your car for any other issues that might act up during a long trip.

Fill your wiper fluid – No one likes trying to clean off a bug-splatted windshield after a long day of driving, only to discover your wiper fluid tank is empty. Refill before you go!

Check your tires – Check the air pressure, and make sure all 4 tires are in good condition, free of damage, with a decent amount of tread left. Don’t forget to check the spare tire, too!

Don’t Leave Without:

Jumper cables – and if you’ve got an emergency jump-starter, make sure to charge it before you go.

Up-to-date navigation – if you’ve got the kind of navigation system that needs a software update to stay current, do it now!

All the paperwork you’ll need in an emergency – if your proof of insurance, vehicle registration, warranty information, or the owner’s manual have ended up outside your glove box, put them back so they’ll be easy to find in case of emergency. If you have roadside assistance, make sure that phone number is handy.

An extra phone charger – better safe than sorry.

Extra snacks and water bottles – ditto.
