Samsung’s Galaxy A3 and A5 to launch in the UK on May 5th

Samsung has just announced that its Galaxy A3 and A5 (2016 edition) smartphones will launch in the UK a couple of days from now on May 5th. The metal and glass clad A3 and A5 handsets feature some updated hardware, and will run Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box. Join us after the break for the rundown on both devices.

While the Galaxy A3 is the budget model of the range, it still features a metal and glass design, albeit with some decidedly low-end specs. The A3 features a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display with 1280 x 720 resolution, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, and 1.5GB of RAM. There’s 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded by up to 128GB thanks to the inclusion of a MicroSD slot. A 13MP camera with f/1.9 aperture resides on the rear panel along with an LED flash, while the front camera has a 5MP sensor.

The A3 supports WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, ANT+, and NFC, along with a USB 2.0 charging port. There’s also a 2,300mAh battery, non-removable of course. Finally, the Galaxy A3 has dimensions of 134.5 x 65.2 x 7.3mm and weighs 132 grams.

Galaxy A5 (2016)

The Galaxy A5, however, is a step up the rung in terms of hardware and features a bigger, Full HD 5.2-inch Super-AMOLED display. The A5 is powered by an Octa-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz, with 2GB of RAM for multitasking. As with the A3, there is 16GB of internal storage with the option of adding up to 128GB of additional storage via the included MicroSD card slot. While the A5’s rear camera is still of the 13MP variety with an LED flash, it also has OIS (Optical-Image-Optimisation). The front camera has a 5MP sensor with f/1.9 aperture.

Being a larger handset naturally means that the A5 has a bigger capacity battery with a 2.900mAh capacity, and Samsung has included some sort of Fast Charging technology. The Galaxy A5 has dimensions of 144.8 x 71 x 7.3mm and weighs in at 155 grams.

Disappointingly, both the Galaxy A3 and A5 (2016 Edition) handsets will run Android 5.1 Lollipop at launch, and will be available in black, white, gold, and rose gold colors. With handsets such as the Honor 5X and Smart Ultra 6 about in the UK, pricing for the Galaxy A range will be key. As yet, though, there are no details on pricing, so its a case of waiting to see what the retailers offer the handsets for on May 5th.

What do you think of the Galaxy A3 and A5 (2016 Edition) handsets? And what sort of price would you consider to be competitive? Let us know in the comments below.
