Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 passes through TENNA

Although the tablet market has cooled off considerably compared to just a couple years ago, that is not stopping Samsung from working on updates to their current top of the line tablets. Earlier this year a pair of devices believed to be the Galaxy Tab S3 8.0 and Galaxy Tab S3 9.7 were spotted making their way through the FCC. Now the 8-inch version has surfaced again, this time passing through China’s TENNA certification. The benefit of this is that the TENNA database includes some images of the device.

Consistent with the earlier FCC filings, the latest information appears to confirm that Samsung is not changing much outside of the update to the name, going from Galaxy Tab S2 to Galaxy Tab S3 with the screen size tacked on for good measure. At least for the 8-inch model spotted, all of the dimensions are the same as last year’s model. From all appearances, the only items that have changed are the processor and the operating system. Samsung is equipping the new version with a Snapdragon 652 processor running at 1.8 GHz whereas last year’s model had a 1.9 GHz Exynos processor. The device also gets an update to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system. Common to the models year-to-year is the 2048 x 1536 resolution AMOLED screen, 8 MP and 2 MP cameras, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, and a 4,000 mAh battery.

There has been no word from Samsung regarding a possible launch date, but it should not be too far off given the status of the certifications. Considering the lack of changes from the Tab S2 models to the new Tab S3 version, we will also have to watch to see what Samsung does about pricing and how aggressively they move to keep people from opting for a year-old unit.
