Google’s Project Soli still in development under the radar

Last year at Google I/O, one of the more interesting Google technology projects that was on display was Project Soli. The project came out of Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) lab and used a bunch of radar sensors onboard a small chip that could detect physical movement sans actual touch. Since then, Google has not revealed much about progress on the project, but some new clues indicate Project Soli is still very much alive.

Two of the biggest clues about the status of Project Soli come from Google job postings. One is for a software architect which indicates the project has “attracted significant world-wide attention and interest from commercial partners.” Another job posting for a hardware engineer includes in the responsibilities section, “integrating Soli sensor into development platforms and proof-of-concept products.”

One of the places where we see gestures being used is with smartwatches. For instance, users can hold their hand over an Android Wear smartwatch screen to dim the display. Integration of Project Soli technology, as specifically mentioned for Android Wear in the ad for the software architect position, would take this current capability to a whole new level.

Besides the job postings, Google also filed some documents with the FCC earlier this year that indicate they are working with third-party developers to keep Project Soli advancing. These partners help test “different chips, form factors, signal processing mechanisms, operating systems, and user interfaces and experiences.”

We will have to watch to see if Google has an updated version of Project Soli available at Google I/O this year or whether they have some better demonstration cases than what was available last year.
