When we first saw these spy shots, we thought it’s one of the prototypes for the recently revealed Mercedes-AMG GLC43. But after looking at it closely, we realized it’s very different and it’s actually an early model for the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC63.

AMG boss Tobias Moers earlier confirmed the production of the GLC63, so what we’re seeing here are actual prototypes of the said crossover.

What are we expecting for the GLC63? Based on the reports we have been getting, the vehicle would have a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine. Such power and maybe even efficiency can be a real competition to other high performance small SUV currently in the market like the Porsche Macan Turbo, in particular.

But the Macan Turbo is not the only threat for the GLC63. There have been some sightings of the BMW X3 M and the Audi RS Q5. The X3 M was tested recently while the RS Q5 was a long-time rumor for Audi.

The GLC63 having the V-8 engine is a concern for some, but this shouldn’t be a problem for a compact SUV since it would have the MRA platform, the same one in the C-Class C63 variant.

There would be two expected models, namely the GLC63 and the GLC63 S. The two are projected to deliver 469 and 503 horsepower, respectively. Both will have a standard 7-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system.

Compared to the GLC43 prototypes, this mule’s bumper is upgraded with a more aggressive design. It also has new wheel arches that fit a wider track. At the next road test, I’m sure we will see a new bumper at the rear, as well as the signature square-shaped exhaust tips.

Since we’re only seeing prototypes, and there has been no word yet on production time, we are expecting the first model to be releases in 2018, after more than a year of developing.
