NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV update adds mouse support

NVIDIA is rolling out an update for their NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV device that adds several new features. The biggest feature to get added is mouse support for navigation purposes via the SHIELD controller’s right stick. The device also gets some Marshmallow related updates and several game optimizations.

For the new mouse navigation scheme, the right stick will now provide access to navigation for any app that does not make use of the right stick already. Developers and users do not need to do anything special as the NVIDIA SHIELD will automatically enable this feature if there are no conflicts in the app. NVIDIA points to the Google Chrome Browser as an example app that does not make use of the right stick itself and thus, can access the new navigation tools.

Although the version number only jumps from 3.0 to 3.1, NVIDIA packed in numerous functions and improvements related to Marshmallow. These include external USB drive detection, FTP write access, a fix for an HDMI-CEC issue, stability improvements to idle/sleep functions, SD card formatting and more items. Along with these improvements, the March 2016 Android security update is included in the package.

As far as games that are newly optimized for the SHIELD Android TV device, the list includes:

  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!
  • Super Mega Baseball Extra Innings
  • Real Racing 3
  • Puddle
  • The Walking Dead: Michonne
  • Parallax
  • Lego: Jurassic World
  • Soma
  • Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed
  • Murdered: Soul Suspect
  • Sleeping Dogs
  • Warhammer: Space Marine
