HTC has designated the HTC 10 IP53, which means you really need to keep this thing away from water. It’s not sealed up at all and there’s some serious potential for water damage here. A splash from the rain here or there won’t hurt it, but anything else and you’re going to want to cover up your $700 investment.
Lack of waterproofing by itself isn’t such a bad thing for a high-end electronic device, but we’ve seen other OEMs take it very seriously. Sony has been waterproofing their Xperia Z line for years, and Samsung has brought waterproofing back to the Galaxy S7. And we’re talking actually submersing these phones, not just splash resistance.
This might not be a deal breaker for most people, but it’s frustrating to see HTC come so close to matching Samsung’s flagship this year on every feature imaginable. HTC does still have a few tricks to pull out (BoomSound speakers, anyone?) but it’s hard to argue that waterproofing wouldn’t be more beneficial to more people.
Any thoughts? Are you still considering picking up the HTC 10 even without a waterproof design?
Come comment on this article: Nope, you can’t get the HTC 10 wet after all
