Here’s how 3D Touch could work on Android N

The second Android N Developer Preview has been out for just a few days, and people keep noticing changes. We’ve already discovered new features like an extra quick toggle, new folders, shortcuts, and emoticons. With some further investigation, Phandroid was able to get an iPhone-like 3D touch feature working, that could let app developers set homescreen shortcuts for their apps.

The feature was uncovered when using a third-party launcher. Just like on Apple’s latest iPhone 6s models, Android N may sport a similar technology displaying quick actions on your device’s homescreen. The video down below shows shortcuts baked into Google’s weather application. The menu can be accessed by pushing down on the display and swiping down on an app.

Not all apps will work, especially at the stage the software is at right now. This may be something Google plans to discuss at their upcoming developer conference in May. Homescreen app shortcuts are much like widgets, but don’t take up space on your display. Using simple gestures, you’ll be able to gain key information from an app without ever opening it. It’s a very neat feature, that clearly has lots of potential. Check it out in the embedded video down below created by Kevin Barry, one of the makers of Nova Launcher, in addition to those at Phandroid.
