Ray Tomlinson, the man who invented email, has passed away

Ray Tomlinson, the man who is accredited to inventing email as we know it, has died.

Tomlinson invented email in 1971, where he developed a system that a person on one network could send another person a message on a different network. Not only that, but he’s also accredited to inventing the use of the “@” inside an email address.

The man has won many awards for his invention over the years, and it’s likely email wouldn’t be where it is today without him. Google posted a message to its Gmail Twitter account to honor Tomlinson and his achievements:

No one knows what the first email ever sent was. Tomlinson is quoted saying that “”I sent a number of test messages to myself from one machine to the other. The test messages were entirely forgettable and I have, therefore, forgotten them.”

Most recently, Tomlinson was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame by the Internet Society in 2012 for his achievements in 1971.
