Google’s optical character recognition can now scan email attachments

Gmail is getting an important update for some allowing it to scan documents using optical character recognition in attempt to find valuable information.

Gmail already has the ability to scan documents, but this update allows it to check for important information stored inside attachments. The aim of this is to prevent users from sending private information to another such as a password or bank account number by mistake. Google is also hoping this will stop workers from sending private information about a company to another that should remain secret. However, as most of you know, email isn’t the only way people communicate these days. If the person is smart about it, he/she might send the information another way.

This is a great step in the right direction for Google. Who knows what will be possible down the road. The updated optical character recognition is now available to paid Google Apps Unlimited members. Hopefully more will be able to get it soon. For now, the best you can do is be careful. If you want to learn more about how email scanning works, check out the image explaining the process down below.
