Why Does My Car Shake?

why does my car shake?

What should you do if your car starts to vibrate and shake when you drive it? First of all, don’t panic! This is a pretty common issue with older cars. The bad news is that there are a lot of different problems that can make your car shake, but the good news is that lots of them are very easy to fix! No matter the issue, Continental Mitsubishi’s service department can handle it. The uncertainty is the hard part — that feeling when you’ve brought your car in for repairs, and you’re anxiously waiting to find out exactly what’s wrong and how long it’s going to take to get you back on the road. So, to help ease some of that uncertainty, here’s some of the most common reasons your car might be shaking.

Why Does My Car Shake at High Speeds?

Issues with your car’s tires are some of the most common causes. If your tires aren’t balanced right, they won’t run even and straight on the road. Uneven tire wear could also be the culprit. In both cases, getting your tires rotated should fix the problem. Bad wheel alignment is usually the reason the tires got unevenly worn in the first place, so you’ll also want to have the alignment checked.  At worst, you could have a damaged or loose tire that needs to be replaced.

If you’ve gotten in a minor accident recently, even hit a pothole or a low curb, you could have a bent axle causing the problem. Even a slightly bent axle can be enough to cause a pretty pronounced shaking at higher speeds.

A wobbly wheel could also be making your car shake. Usually, wheel bearings are meant to last the life of the vehicle. But if your car has exceptionally high mileage, or its wheels have suffered more than the usual wear and tear because of off-roading or similar treatment, it’s possible to need a new wheel bearing. The wheel could also be wobbly because of a worn-out tie-rod end or ball joint. Again, you’ll need a replacement for that worn-out part.If your car only shakes when you hit the brakes, you’ve probably got a warped brake rotor. If your car shakes even when you’re not moving, this is cause for the most concern. In that case, the car could have a broken motor mount or another engine issue. Get it inspected right away!
