Tata Zica city car revealed for Indian market

India’s Tata Motors has released images of a new sub-light hatch that will go on sale in the company’s home market early next year.

Dubbed Zica, the little city car will replace Tata’s Indica hatch in India, which has been on sale there in its second-generation form since 2008.

The Zica shares its platform with the Indica that it replaces, and reports out of India suggest that motivation will be provided by new three-cylinder 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and 1.05-litre diesel engines.

As is often the case with budget-focused models in developing markets, safety kit in the Zica – and possibly only in the top-spec model – is expected to be limited to two front airbags, matched to ABS and electronic brake-force distribution.

In India, the Zica will take on models like the Suzuki Celerio, the Chevrolet Beat (known here as the Holden Barina Spark) and the Hyundai i10.

Locally, Tata remains focused on the commercial vehicle market, offering only the Xenon pickup ute.
