Mazda MX-5 tops November sports car sales

The Mazda MX-5 hit the top of the sports car sales charts in November for the first time in years, on the back of the new model’s greatly improved pricing.

The fourth-generation of the now iconic budget convertible series managed 221 sales in November, edging out the Toyota 86 (209), BMW 2 Series (176) and Hyundai Veloster (149) to lead the segment.

For context, the 221 units total compares to the November 2014 result achieved by the previous ‘NC’ MX-5: nine units. Yes, the old MX-5 managed just nine sales in the same month last year.

The strong month is a combination of the 1.5-litre MX-5 that went on sale in August, and the first registrations of the new 2.0-litre versions that launched to the press just last week.

As we know, the new MX-5 remains predominately male-skewed, but the shift to younger buyers has been noted. While 80 per cent of previous-generation MX-5 owners were aged above 45, that figure has dropped below 60 per cent.

For those interested, Mazda has sold 675 MX-5s this year. This figure is significantly higher than the total volume achieved by the NC MX-5 over the past three years combined.
