Kia will be introducing a plug-hybrid Optima



Kia Optima Plug-in Hybrid

Kia is looking to jump into the plug-in hybrid competition. A new Kia Optima plug-in hybrid will be added to the company’s 2016 lineup. This will be Kia’s first plug-in hybrid that will be available on the global market. The car is expected to go on sale during the second half of 2016.

The plug-in hybrid Kia Optima is part of a string of advancements and updates that are planned for the Optima. All of these changes are part of Kia’s commitment to broaden its global range of low-emission vehicles.

The new Optima hybrid features a larger battery pack, more powerful electric motor and revised transmission. The changes are expected to improve the fuel economy of the Kia Optima by 10%.Kia Optima plug-in hybrid interior

The plug-in Optima hybrid will feature a 9.8 kWh lithium-polymer battery back that produces roughly six-times the energy output of the current Optima hybrid. The battery is paired with a 50 kW electric motor. The car is expected to have the ability to travel up to 27 miles on battery power alone. Supporting the electric system is a 2.0-litre ‘Nu’ four-cylinder direct gasoline injection engine.

Improved efficiency over the entire Kia lineup

The plug-in Optima will feature a charging port integrated into the driver-side front panel. Kia engineers are targeting the goal of 40 combined miles per gallon the Kia Optima plug-in hybrid.

Kia is hoping to improve the average efficiency of its entire model lineup by 2020. Through new engine and transmission technologies and weight reductions, Kia is planning a 20% improvement in average fuel economy.
