Hemmings Find of the Day – 1939 American Bantam Speedster

1939AmericanBantam_01_700

Without a two-tone paint scheme like we’ve seen on many other de Sakhnoffsky Bantams, this 1939 American Bantam Speedster for sale on Hemmings.com might look a little plain (ignoring, of course, the chrome trim, the skirts, the sporty body style…), but under the hood it looks rather fab, thanks to the recent engine rebuild and the shine still on all the replaced or reconditioned parts. From the seller’s description:

This car is very complete, including the convertible top and side curtains with bows. It sports a rust-free older body and interior restoration. The engine was completely professionally rebuilt in the summer and fall of 2015 and has only been driven on test runs since. It starts, runs, idles, and drives great for a 76-year old vehicle.

Powered by a 45-cubic-inch side-valve 4-cylinder engine making about 20 horsepower, Bantams are the original American economy car. A true micro-car at nine feet long overall, 75-inch wheelbase, and weighing about 1,200 pounds.

Take it to any car show and watch the people ignore the Ferraris, Porsches, Packards, and everything else, to admire this incredibly compelling little car.
