2015-2016 Polaris Slingshot Recalled for Headlight Failures

Polaris is recalling 2015-2016 Slingshot models because of a problem with their headlights. The recall affects all versions including the base Slingshot, the Slingshot SL and Slingshot SL LE produced up until late October this year.

According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Slingshot’s headlights may cut out while the vehicle is in operation. Initially, the headlights may intermittently flash off and on, but if the problem is not corrected, the headlight circuit may get damaged, completely disabling the headlights.

Polaris has identified two problems that combine to create the headlight failure. In high temperatures under the hood, the amperage rating for the headlight circuit may become marginal. As well, the female terminal pin may reach higher than normal temperatures. These two issues can cause the headlight relay to fail, leading to damaged wiring.

Headlight issues were first reported to Polaris in July 2015, with more reports coming in during the ensuing months. Polaris initiated an investigation in October which resulted in the decision to conduct a recall.

Polaris Slingshot dealers will replace the original relay circuit with a new circuit that uses two relays. Slingshots produced after Oct. 27, 2015, already have the dual-relay circuit installed. The recall campaign affects 9,182 units in the U.S.
