The low-slung Volvo Concept Coupe may at last be bound for market, with news that the Swedish carmaker registered a pair of telling names with the US Patent and Trademark Office on November 5: C40 and C60.
Just as the letter S has come to represent Volvo’s sedan models, while V and XC represent hatches/wagons and SUVs respectively, the letter C has been associated with two-door variants.
The prefix has most recently been represented by the now retired C70 convertible, but this latest news suggests we could soon see a pair of small and mid-sized two-door lines, possibly in both coupe and convertible forms.
The Concept Coupe, revealed in 2013 as a slick preview of Volvo’s new styling language – now seen on the big XC90 SUV and recently leaked S90/V90 scale models – remains our best look at the potential styling for a future Volvo coupe.
Still, the registration of trademarks is no confirmation in itself, with carmakers often securing model names as a means of protecting their potential brand strategies – even if they never eventuate – from being snapped up by rival carmakers.
Volvo has previously confirmed that a large coupe, at least, is on its wish list for the future. But, with the replacement and fleshing-out of its wider passenger car range taking priority, it could be closer to 2020 or later before a new two-door model appears.
