Our power is unbelievable, and that gives us a big advantage, especially on the straights. But also our wheelie—our balance—is very good. When we have to exit a corner with a low gear, we can accelerate very well.
The biggest limit we have, especially for my style, is braking stability. I really need strong braking. I use the braking to have the speed—to go fast—but our limit is too big.
They are working a lot to try to understand which point we have to change to improve stability. The rear “jumps” too easily, and you have to release pressure on the brakes.
I’m not so good in the middle of the corner. It’s not my best characteristic. It is the reason why I struggle, especially from the middle of the season.
The bike improved a lot since last year. Turning was the weak point of the old bike. When you released the brake, the bike didn’t turn.
We fixed that with the new bike. With that limit, you could do a lap with a new tire, but you couldn’t have a good pace for the race. But, like almost always, when you improve some point, you lose another.
Bridgestone and Michelin are completely different—casing, rubber, grip, how they are moving. Next year, the tire will be fixed, more or less. So it’s not about what we want from the new tires. We have to adapt to the tires.
First work is for the rider to adapt to the tires. Second is to adapt the bike to the tires. This is very difficult because the balance from front to rear is completely different. It’s not about trying three or four setups and you will fix it. Unfortunately, it is not that easy.
Already, every team has some details from the past. The tires are a little bit different compared to 2008, but the mentality, the way Michelin makes tires, doesn’t change. It will be difficult but not like the
change from Michelin to Bridgestone.
At this moment, the Michelin front is not as good as the Bridgestone front because the balance from front to rear is completely different. So we have to understand how to use these differences.
How much electronics we are using now is unbelievable. Next year will be different. We have to see how the bike works without all the electronics. For
Honda,
Yamaha, and
Ducati, it is not clear how the electronics will be next year.
Electronics in the past five or six years have made a huge improvement. It looks like the electronics and the tires will make a big difference but until next year nobody will know. I don’t think many teams will use the new electronics at the test in Malaysia.
A big change is always exciting for everybody. It can be frustrating but it is always nice.
