The Mercedes team capped off an immensely successful 2015 Formula One season by taking a 1-2 finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Nico Rosberg completed his hat trick, taking the race win ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton.
The team surpassed its points tally from last year by 2 points, finishing with a whopping 703.
Rosberg made good use of his sixth straight pole qualification, converting it into his third straight race win and sixth overall for the season. This is Mercedes’ 12th overall 1-2 finish this season, a fitting end to an otherwise anticlimactic final leg.
The next constructor, rival Ferrari, finished with 428, bolstered by Kimi Raikkonen taking the third spot on the podium and Sebastian Vettel claiming 4th place after starting the race from 15th on the grid.
There’s no doubt Rosberg is on a hot streak. There’s no telling how next year will be for the team, but if Nico can keep this momentum going, it will certainly make things more interesting.
“Awesome guys, thanks for that season,” said Rosberg as he stepped off his car. “It was really great.” Later, he added that the team is “aware” of Ferrari getting closer, and that there will be work done to ensure the Silver Arrows stay at the top.
At the end of the 2015 season, we have Hamilton – who was crowned champion four races ago – with 381 points, Rosberg with 322, and then Vettel at 278.
McLaren, who is in its first year of an engine deal with comeback provider Honda, finished with 27 total points this season, ahead of only the scoreless Marussia team.
We’re all looking forward to a great 2016 season! To cap this one off, here’s an RT of Nico’s burnouts to cap the race:
