Hemmings Find of the Day – 1990 Porsche 944S2 cabriolet

1990 Porsche 944S2 cabriolet

Shown as a concept at the 1985 Frankfurt Auto Show, the production Porsche 944S2 cabriolet would take until 1989 to hit the market. By then, the contract for assembly was handed off from Bauer to the American Sunroof Company (ASC), which set up shop in Heilbronn, Germany, just to build the drop-top Porsches. The additional bracing required to maintain chassis stiffness added 154 pounds to the 944S2 cabriolet, but maximum performance was never the car’s intended mission. This 1990 944S2 cabriolet, for sale on Hemmings.com, was one of just 1,824 built for the North American market in the model’s penultimate year. Powered by 3.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 208 horsepower and mated to a five-speed manual, this uncommon Porsche should still deliver impressive performance, with the added benefit of open-air motoring, for about the same price as a used third-generation Mazda Miata. From the seller’s description:

1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet Ventilier 3.0L 208hp 4 cylinder. Less than 2,000 944 S2 Cabriolets were sold in the US between 1989-1991. This rare color combination of Alpine white with blue top is hard to find. Fun to drive car, good manners, lots of looks from other drivers. I have enjoyed being the caretaker of this car for the last year and have made some nice memories with it, but it’s time for me to move on to the next fun car.

Low miles, never wrecked, original paint in good condition. Drives great, engine runs good and 5 speed manual trans shifts well. Everything works – power seats, automatic climate control, cruise control, power top. Dash is in good condition, all gauges work, leather seats are comfortable. Previous owner installed an Alpine stereo with a subwoofer in the trunk. Clear title and clean vehicle history check

Previous owners, and myself, have taken great care of this car. New convertible top, Clutch slave and master, clutch pressure plate, timing belt, water pump and more have been properly replaced in the last few years. A/C has been converted to R134. Nearly new tires, less than 4,000 miles on them, and a new battery was installed just this year.

The only issue I know of is with the driver seat bottom, where it has started to separate at a seam, easily fixable by an upholstery shop (see pic).
