Hemmings Find of the Day – 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302

1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302

A car is only original once, and it stands to reason that well-preserved and unrestored cars can command a premium price over restored examples of the same make and model. According to the owner of this 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302, for sale on Hemmings.com, the car is a 24,000 mile survivor, with only minor battle scars (and no rust) to show for its four and half-decade existence. Only the engine block has been changed (in 1972, when the car suffered a piston skirt failure), and the Grabber Blue Boss comes with an MCA “Gold Survivor” award to document its as-built status. From the seller’s description:

1970 Boss 302 Mustang, Grabber Blue with black interior. This is an original, unrestored, never been repainted (verified by speaking with 2 previous owners) 24,000 mile car. Mileage verified by previous owners and title history. My Boss 302 earned a Mustang Club of America (MCA) “Gold Survivor” award to confirm it’s originality. Built in Metuchen NJ Ford plant in December 1969 it bears all of it’s original markings from the factory. Factory buck tag is in place. It is in outstanding condition.

Confirmed engine block was replaced by the second owner who worked in the service department of the Ford Dealer where the car was sold. Block replaced in 1972 with correct Boss 302 replacement block. Many Boss’s suffered from piston skirt failure, this was one of them. When the block was replaced all other engine parts were retained.

Options include center console, traction ock 3:91 rear, color keyed racing mirrors, shaker hood, rim blow steering wheel, AM radio with 8 track tape, magnum 500 wheels ans space saver tire.

No rust, minimal battle scars which might be expected from a 45 year old original car. Exhaust, shocks, trunk mat, space saver spare and all interior is original. You can search for years and never find a Boss 302 in this original condition along with complete documentation. Documents include shipper form, build sheet, Deluxe Marti Report, buck tag, MCA judging sheets and photos taken with Larry Shinoda. Car also signed under hood by Mr. Shinoda.

Restored Boss 302’s are quite common. A Boss in this condition with 24,000 miles is almost unheard of.
