EICMA 2015 FIRST LOOK: 2016 Yamaha XSR900 Neo-Retro Cafe Racer The Yamaha FZ-09 gets a killer restyling job.
Retro looks and modern tech? That’s the Yamaha XSR900 in a nutshell. The new naked from Yamaha features the fantastic FZ-09 platform that’s been been given a cafe retro styling treatment and is meant to evoke the company’s XS line of twins and triples of the 60s and 70s. And this is one Milan-show Yamaha that’s for sure coming to the US market. Redone bodywork and design details like the cool round headlight and taillight change the look significantly, while underneath the same “CP3” 847cc triple belts out killer power to the tune of a claimed 115 hp. Traction control and ABS (lifted from the FJ-09) take it up a notch from the more entry-level FZ-09. The frame is the same excellent cast aluminum diamond twin spar compactly wrapped around the engine. Wheelbase spans a generous 56.7 inches. This is a bike for grown people, with seat set at 32.7 inches above the ground and a “ready to go” weight kept at a reasonable 430 pounds. Front suspension is by 43mm inverted fork set at 25° rake and with 103mm of trail. Rear suspension is by cast aluminum swingarm and link actuated monoshock. Yamaha said the bike was developed with input from both the US and European market with obvious strong influence from the current custom-bike scene and there is clearly a link to the Yamaha-commissioned Roland Sands Design Faster Wasp custom build, which evokes the spirit of the fearsome TZ750. US pricing for the Yamaha XSR900 is expected to be released in February and it’s highly likely to slot between the $8190 FZ-09 and $10,490 FJ-09. Nicest touch of all is the optional black-and-yellow bumble bee paint scheme.
