CW EVALUATION: Pirelli Diablo Rosso III World Exclusive: We sample Pirelli’s new Diablo Rosso IIIs at the company’s test track in Italy.

riding the BMW S1000XR with new Pirelli Diablo Rosso III on the track Pirelli is about to introduce the new Diablo Rosso III, and I am pleased to report that I was given an exclusive opportunity to test the tire at Pirelli’s test track in Italy, thanks to my good friend Salvo Pennisi, the Director of Pirelli Motorcycle Tires Test and Development Department. While I was a the track to test the Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory, Salvo showed me the experimental section of the shop, where I saw a BMW S1000XR shod with the new Diablo Rosso III in the standard 120/70-17 and 190/55-17 sizes. New tread, new compounds, new concepts—all gained from experience with the Diablo Supercorsa in World Superbike, but not completely. Pirelli Diablo Rosso III motorcycle tires side view The new Rosso III, as it’s called, is a radical evolution of the best tires I’ve ever ridden. After we talked about the new Diablo Rosso’s intent, or its mission, Salvo invited me to get on that huge S1000XR and test “his” new tires. It’s a small group that has tested these new Diablo Rosso radials, which includes Pirelli testers Jonathan Rea, the 2015 Superbike World Champion, and Tom Sykes, the 2013 title winner. Besides being elated, I was impressed. The BMW S1000XR is a comfortable and very well conceived Super GT bike that represents the top choice in the domain of the enduro-inspired tourers. It features a tall and ample seat, long-travel suspension, a wide handlebar, and a not-insubstantial dry weight of 505 lb. This BMW is meant more for long and easy high-speed highway hauling than for sporty rides. But it took only a few corners, including a tricky blind one of decreasing radius, to feel the total neutrality of the S1000XR and its ultra precise steering response. With more laps I gained confidence and started leaning the BMW more seriously, the Rosso IIIs boasting a totally reassuring feel. Pirelli Diablo Rosso III motorcycle tires tread close-up The Diablo Rosso III is not an all-out supersport radial. It’s a highly versatile radial that incorporates WSBK experience and some advanced technologies that Pirelli has developed in Formula 1 racing. Silica is used in the rubber compound to improve performance in the wet, but Pirelli specialists have been able to make this inert additive interact with the polymeric components to obtain a very stable compound that interfaces with the steel belts and carcass to make profiles (derived from the racing radials) that perform well on dry or wet roads. The Diablo Rosso III front is a single-compound tire, whereas the rear has two. Compounds and profiles are unique front and rear, as are the belts, carcasses, and treads. As such, the new Pirelli Rosso III, with its stable and ample footprint, delivers quicker and neater responses, plus more grip. I didn’t expect a bike the size and stance of the BMW S1000XR to be so agile, so sharp, so neutral, so quick into line and so surefooted at peg-grinding lean angles. But it’s all in the pictures… Pirelli Diablo Rosso III motorcycle tires track action. Pirelli Diablo Rosso III motorcycle tires track action. Pirelli Diablo Rosso III motorcycle tires track action.
