The all-new 2016 Subaru Impreza, only recently previewed as a sleek hatch concept at the Tokyo motor show, has been spied testing in sedan form this week.
That recent concept hasn’t been our only preview of Subaru’s new small car, however, with earlier spy photos revealing a few clues of the hatch model’s final shape.
In both cases, sedan and hatch alike, the overall styling revealed here – albeit in heavy camouflage – confirms that despite Subaru’s claim that the wide and low-slung Impreza concept is a genuine preview of what’s to come, the final product will clearly take on more practical proportions.
Nonetheless, these latest images hint at a more flowing shape to the new Impreza sedan’s roofline, joined at both ends by a sloping bonnet and a short rear deck.
Finer styling point remain tightly under wraps, although Subaru’s design and product planning chief Manoru Ishii told CarAdvice last week that a look more sporting than the awkward details of the current model is on the cards.
“Customers view the current Impreza [design approach] very much with a safety image [though] not with a fun image. The next Impreza needs to be more emotional,” Ishii said.
“[it] needs to be fun, sportier and [stylistically] faster. More dynamism.”
Watch for the new Impreza to make its global debut in the coming year.
