Mid City Subaru's Recycling and Conservation Efforts Reap Green Rewards

Not many car companies can claim to be as environmentally friendly as Subaru. In addition to building fuel efficient and low emission producing vehicles, it also has gone to great lengths to incorporate the use of lightweight materials in the construction of all its vehicles, using parts made from recycled and natural elements. Indeed Subaru's manufacturing plant in Indiana is known for being the first 'Zero Landfill' auto assembly facility in the U.S., where old parts are recycled or reused instead of thrown away...creating more landfills.

Subaru's corporate commitment to green business practices extends to its dealerships, including Berman's Mid City Subaru. The service department recycles 80 percent of the parts that come off old vehicles. Anything from tires, bumpers, brake rotors, engine parts, to glass and plastic can be found in a collection bin outside their service area.

And what, you may ask, can these items be transformed into? Here's a partial list:
  • Tires-- shredded, cleaned, and recycled into everything from playground surfaces to garden mulch
  • Iron and steel-- used to make new steel
  • Wiring harness -- copper and other materials shredded to be reused
  • Bumper cover -- used in everything from plastic containers to outdoor furniture
  • Polymer (acrylic) taillight lenses -- used to make new polymer parts
  • Glass -- recycled to make new windows in vehicles as well as in buildings and homes, plus a variety of household products
To save on paper, Mid City Subaru uses an online program to communicate with body and wholesale shops, versus faxing over orders. Along with bulk ordering and utilizing an electronic contracting system, the staff also makes a concerted effort to use both sides of a sheet of paper whenever possible.

Finally, for customers who are having their cars serviced and may need a quick mode of transportation, Mid City Subaru offers bike rentals. What could be more green than that?!
