Everywhere you look there is dash cam footage. Whether it’s people driving poorly on the highway or video of bizarre accidents, you’re bound to find it online. With all the dash cam video out there it appears that the technology is now more popular than ever. With that said, is it worth it to get a dash cam?
Will having a dash cam lower my insurance rates?
It’s unlikely. While insurance companies in the U.K. have started doing this, it isn’t likely to take off in the U.S. anytime soon. Many U.S. insurance companies see dash cams as technology that does nothing to help prevent a crash and, thus, there’s no reason to offer any sort of discount.
Will dash cam video help in court?
Maybe. Because every car accident and courtroom is different, it’s difficult to say. One downside to dash cam footage is it only shows one view. So depending on the situation, a court might not even look at the video footage because it only shows one side of the story. So it all really depends.
Should I get a dash cam?
At the end of the day it’s better to be safe than sorry. With that said, there’s no guarantee that what you record will be helpful to you later. Until more insurance companies catch on or the technology improves even more, it’s truly a personal preference whether or not to get one.
