While it shows no evidence of its original or previous race liveries following its restoration back to as-delivered condition, this 1966 Ford Custom lightweight drag racer does come with complete documentation from its original owners authenticating it as a factory lightweight and reportedly as the last full-size factory lightweight that Ford built. Will it tear up the quarter mile once again? That’s up to the next owners, apparently. From the seller’s description:
This “purpose built” one-off drag car was originally procured by brothers Bobby and Cecil Edge, of Oneonta, Alabama, who took delivery of this car from Fred Peak Ford. They were able to obtain the car with its modifications through contacts they made at the Ford Motor Company after years of racing Ford products. With a production date of March 24, 1966, this car is the last full size factory built lightweight drag car. They raced the car until 1967.
Powered by an “R” Code medium riser 427 CID V-8 with dual 715 Holley quads and a Toploader 4-speed manual transmission, this car has the following modifications that were completed at Ford’s Atlanta Assembly plant prior to delivery to the original owners:
Teardrop fiberglass hood, Thunderbolt Ram Air induction, Dual point ignition, Cast iron headers, Full exhaust system, Battery relocation to trunk, 4:56 ratio Detroit Locker rear differential with nodular rear center section, 31 spline axles, Clock, radio, heater and left side mirror deletes
After passing through the hands of several owners and receiving multiple mechanical and cosmetic alterations through the years, the most recent owner purchased the car in 1988 with the desire to bring it back to the state in which Bobby and Cecil Edge raced it in 1966. Over the next 20 years, a frame-off restoration was performed, during which no part of the car was left untouched. In addition to a complete mechanical restoration, the car was partially rebodied. It was also repainted in its original Wimbledon White. Since being completed in 2008, the car has been driven less than 100 miles and has always been properly stored in a climate controlled facility.
This car is listed in the 427 Galaxie Registry. A photograph album documenting its restoration will be included with sale, as will correspondence between the most recent owner and Bobby and Cecil Edge.
