The article on David Lockard’s 1918 Packard 3-ton truck from the other day prompted reader Andrew Crews, an archivist with the San Antonio Public Library, to forward several photos to us, depicting another big Packard truck in a less-than-ideal situation.
According to Andrew, World War I soldier Daniel Essary of San Antonio took the pictures and Essary’s daughter, Thelma Maddox, donated them to the library. The photos come without context, though Andrew said he believes the terrain looks Texan. For all we know, this could have been part of the original Bankhead Highway convoy.
We also don’t know the ultimate fate of the Packard. Did all those mules and men succeed in freeing it, or does the Packard still sit aside an old Texas country road somewhere, left to the elements?
