Las Vegas, 1964

LasVegas1964_01_1200

All this time looking at carspotting photos of Las Vegas from the mid-century period, we pretty much assumed most of the cars belonged to vacationers who drove in to town, either specifically to go gambling or as part of a Griswold-style family cross-country road trip vacation. These two found photos, which Vintage Las Vegas recently posted and which date to July 1964, have us questioning that assumption. For one, most of the cars in both photos are white or light colored – certainly something Las Vegas residents, accustomed to the sun and heat, would consider in purchasing a car, but not something vacationers from Milwaukee would give much thought to. Second, though the Western Airlines sign doesn’t specifically mention rental cars, we’d have to believe that there was a rental car agency somewhere near this location and that many, if not all, of the white cars in the photos were there for people flying in to rent. Something to think about when looking through these old Las Vegas carspotting photos.  That all said, what do you see here?
