Finding a vehicle is fuel efficient can certainly be a deciding factor when debating between two vehicles, but if you feel as though your vehicle isn’t achieving what it’s supposed to in terms of city and highway driving…it might be because of bad driving habits.
The majority of us are on the road every day, and so it’s easy to fall into a rhythm with driving or find ourselves running late and not driving like it’s our driver’s test.
- Don’t drive-Alright, go ahead and roll your eyes at how obvious this one is, but in all seriousness if it is a short trip down the block that you’re able to walk rather than drive, or carpool, this is a great way to save money and it’s a plus for the environment.
- Bumper cars-This isn’t the carnival, so stop trying to play bumper cars. Tailgating is a great culprit for burning up fuel. Having to continuously hit the gas and the brake depending on the driver in front of you is going to eat up gas compared to keeping your distance and a steady speed.
- You can’t win every game of red light, green light- Alright, we know that your Kia Cadenza is packing an impressive amount of power, 293 horses to be exact, but that’s don’t mean you need to flaunt those ponies by racing up to every red light and rocket off from every green. Sending this much fuel to your engine to give it the power to go is just burnt up money.
- It’s the highway, not the Indy 500- When the speed limit is 65 mph, most of us go at least 70. And when it’s 70, most of us go at least 75 if not 10 over, but the problem with driving faster for these extended distances is that you’re actually going to decrease your average fuel efficiency rating, which means consuming more fuel.
- Restart rather than stand still- Even though it was originally thought to be worse to continually restart your vehicle, it actually is a better fuel-saving option rather than letting your engine sit and idle. Thanks to fuel-injection engines, once they are already warmed up, it doesn’t take much to start them back up again.
