PHOTO ESSAY: Indy MotoGP by iPhone Gentlemen, start your party.

From Hollister to Sturgis to Indy, bikers love a party. Oh sure, some enthusiasts also enjoy watching racing. But the Red Bull MotoGP at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has confirmed that for many, racing is just the excuse, the background music. Racing is the means for knowing on what date the party will be happening. A great deal of what the Indy MotoGP event is occurs in downtown Indianapolis. At Motorcycles on Meridian, a good 10 blocks of the city’s center is blocked off to car traffic. The party starts each afternoon while some motorcycles are still doing laps at the Speedway, and ends…

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-44) But first, some images from the Motor Speedway. Who is the world’s favorite MotoGP racer? A crowd was always waiting behind the garage of rider number 46.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-55) Fast, sure, but not number 46.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-66) Totally not number 46.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-77) Enough Red Bull girls for everyone’s photos? Center, Rick Dorfmeyer and Kenan Ikels (black T-shirt) of Tucker-Rocky, plus a tourist in shorts.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-88) How to scare a Luddite. The Yamaha television, listening, charging station for public use in the MotoAmerica paddock.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-1211) Not the garage of MotoGP rider number 46.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-1312) He’s conquered dirt and salt, but maybe not pavement: Multi-time Grand National champion and motorcycle land-speed record winner Chris Carr.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-1413) Wait, what does an umbrella girl take pictures of?

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-1514) The answer to that nagging question? Another umbrella girl, but of course.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-1615) Lucky Yates, father of racer Aaron, grandfather of racer Ashton, on his “Shovelution” Harley.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-1716) What happens when creative kids own the Corporation: Brian Case of Motus Motorcycles with the one-off blown Motus-powered performance cruiser he built. I so want to ride this bike.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-1817) Too pretty not to show you the other side of the bike that Brian built: Motus-powered, one-off, supercharged beast by the man who designed the Motus brand of bikes. Built in Birmingham, Alabama.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-1918) Just so you know, the helicopter wasn’t actually leading because it was cheating, constantly cutting the course. It did make me nervous, going by each lap at eye level.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-2319) The race for third.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-2420) And now for something completely different: Motorcycles on Meridian. It’s all about the accessorizing.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-2521) Suddenly, the world is dominated by cruisers. But notice the street name. And they even named a store after King Kenny.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-2622) The Renegade Pigs: a bike club of former and active law enforcement-type humans.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-2723) The party went beyond the Civil War Monument in the distance. No cars, motorcycles parked on both sides and two rows down the middle, Sturgis style. And again, notice the predominance of baggers and cruisers.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-3026) The city of Indianapolis is every year a great host to this event.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-3127) There’s no Indy without “U." I mean “I." But this “I" was aggressively photo-bombed.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-3328) Not just stretched, but a quality swingarm build of credit.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-3429) A detail of Frankenstein’s ’Busa.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-3530) Sure, but there’s no end table for my drink.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-3631) Rockin’ the mayhem at the Monument on Meridian with motorcycles.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-3732) If you have a tripod you can do anything you want.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-3833) Just taking it in.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-3934) Someone thought they were at Hollister. Maybe there’s a creative photographer from Life magazine lurking about.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-4035) There was a bit of everything at Motorcycles on Meridian, but this might have been the best bike on the street.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-4136) Where are the 17-in. whitewall tires when you need them?

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-4237) The happiest girls in Indy.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-4338) The Civil War Monument and Museum on Meridian. Cripes, he’s got his gun drawn!

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-4439) Groms are cool, shorts aren’t.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-4540) Stretched bikes are cool, shorts aren’t. Same goes for you on that bagger, buddy.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-4641) Robbing a photographer’s photo shoot.

Indy-MotoGP-by-iPhone-4742) Indy loves me. Well, maybe Indy loves motorcycles.
