The sixth-generation Ford Mustang utilizes a global platform allowing both Ford and Shelby American to sell their cars in 100 new markets.
Shelby products like the Cobra and Mustang G.T. 350 have been world-famous for half a century. Now, according to industry publication Automotive News (via Motor Authority), Shelby American is planning to at last start selling those products worldwide. The sixth-generation Ford Mustang, on which many Shelby vehicles are based, has evolved into a global platform. Not only does this open up new markets to Ford, but also to the Las Vegas-based tuner.
The international scope of new sales presents challenges for Shelby, as it is not simply a matter of exporting its existing models. Shelby-modified vehicles must comply with local regulations as to fuel economy, emissions, and allowable modifications in all 100 of its potential new markets. To that end, Shelby has established relationships with local partners to begin applying the Shelby brand in-market; most notably with Ford Lio Ho, a Chinese company in which Ford Motor Company has a 70% stake.
The 2015 Shelby GT sports a supercharged, 627 hp V-8. International buyers can expect EcoBoost four-cylinder power.
Overseas buyers will largely get slightly different models from the famously powerful supercharged V-8s offered by Shelby in the U.S., and the company anticipates its global performance vehicles will primarily stem from the turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engines, which produce up to 345 hp.
In addition to cars, Shelby’s global partners will also be playing a part in Shelby American’s transition from tuner to lifestyle brand, in the vein of NASCAR or Harley-Davidson. Expect to see Shelby American retail stores both domestically and abroad selling Shelby-branded apparel and racing products.
