MOTOGP INDY BLOG: FREE PRACTICE 3 It’s push and shove as the MotoGP riders search for speed at Indianapolis.

Marc Marquez race action shot Honda-mounted Marc Marquez stayed out of reach at the top at Indy, his tires bouncing, his back wheel kicking out on corner entry, his body movements in direction-changing being ahead of his movements of the bike. Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi remained stuck in P10 lap after lap, even though his movements on the bike were quicker than yesterday’s. Everything looked normal for a long time, with Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo (0.166 seconds back) on top, followed by the two Andreas (Dovizioso and Iannone) on Ducati, then the crowd of hopefuls. Where was Suzuki? Presently, Maverick Vinales answered that by jumping up into 3rd with an effort-filled lap that place him only 0.337 seconds off Marquez and ahead of the Ducatis. Meanwhile, Rossi fell to 11th. Maverick Viñales race action shot It was interesting to see Marquez’s visible large steering movements. He certainly isn’t rough, but he definitely isn’t smooth at this speed. Rossi jumped up to 4th with a lap of 1:33.130, but he was still seven-tenths off of Marquez.  In contrast to Marquez, Rossi moves himself as he moves the bike. The Italian hero eventually jumped to 3rd with a 1:32.991, but he was still 0.589 seconds away from clear air. Bradley Smith on the Monster Tech3 Yamaha, cracked off a “we try harder” lap to become 2nd, then promptly got it a bit wrong and was on the grass, unhurt. His Tech3 teammate and co-rider in winning the Suzuka 8-hour, Pol Espargaro, has been signed by Yamaha for another year but Smith has not. When I asked about this, I learned that Espargaro had his full team of management and empowered negotiators with him at the 8-hour, while Smith had only himself. This puts his maximum effort lap and following crash in perspective. Andrea Iannone race action shot Wiser men know that the only lap time of real importance is the one you can consistently do in the race. Young hopefuls pop up like fall mushrooms in practice but the awful realities of the race itself push them down. Seconds from the end, Honda’s Dani Pedrosa jumped to 3rd, and Andrea Iannone immediately did the same, pushing the Honda rider to 4th.
