INDY MOTOGP BLOG: MORNING WARM-UP Observations from the inside of Turn 1.

Jorge Lorenzo race action shot All was well with Jorge Lorenzo as he finished Turn 1 in morning warm-up at Indianapolis, but in the next instant the front tire of his Yamaha gave up the load. Former rider Mike Baldwin once said, “You still have a lot of riding to do after you hit the ground.” Lorenzo slid on his back, consciously making himself into as flat a “brake pad” as he could, with the intention of getting stopped as quickly and stably as possible so he could run back to the garage and get his B bike to resume the session. There was applause from the people lining the wall in Turn 1 as he trotted past. In the previous minutes, we had received acoustic testimony as to who was on-throttle here, and how much. Bradley Smith’s Monster Tech3 Yamaha was pretty quiet as he attended to corner speed rather than acceleration, but loudest of all (and a bit ragged-sounding, too) was Marc Marquez’s Honda. Marquez was using more throttle, and he was going notably faster than others. Marc Marquez race action shot That bit of raggedness from the Honda could be the edge of the engine problem Marquez struggled with during the first half of the season (which has since been dealt with by a combination of technical and riding countermeasures). I heard similar slight raggedness from Doug Chandler’s cammed-up Muzzy Kawasaki at Laguna years ago; the more valve overlap an engine has, the harder it is for the ignition spark to always find a bit of ignitable mixture on part-throttle. The more valve overlap the cams are given in the interest of top power, the more exhaust dilution there usually is at lower revs and part-throttle. But that’s just speculation. Needless to say, Marquez topped the session: MORNING WARMUP TIMES 1) Marc Marquez                       1:32.699 2) Dani Pedrosa                        1:32.877 3) Jorge Lorenzo                       1:32.883 4) Valentino Rossi                     1:33.202 5) Andrea Iannone                    1:32.339 Lorenzo 2 YFR_150807182723036_1-(1) YFR_150807182723036_15-(1) _5d_6218-lowres
