Hemmings Find of the Day – 1963 Ford Galaxie 500XL fastback hardtop

1963 Ford Galaxie 500 XL fastback

For customers wanting the Thunderbird’s power and ride, but not its price, Ford offered the 1963 Galaxie 500XL in a variety of body styles. A new introduction midway through the model year was the “semi fastback” two-door hardtop, introduced with an aggressive marketing campaign to pirate sales from rival Chevrolet. This 1963 ½ Galaxie 500 XL fastback hardtop, for sale on Hemmings.com, comes with the optional 390-cu.in. V-8, which in its least potent form still produced 300 horsepower. It also comes with power steering and power brakes, but per the seller’s description will need a bit of mechanical and interior work to convert from a project car to a daily driver or weekend cruiser. None of the needed work sounds complicated enough to scare off the competent backyard mechanic, and for a modest investment, this could be fun project car. From the seller’s description:

1963 1/2 Galaxie 500XL Fastback. Corinthian White ext, Viking Blue int, 390, power steering, power brakes, center consoul, front buckets. Body, glass, trim is in great shape overall. Needs a carb tuning, brake booster rebuild (or new), and transmission linkage to be a daily driver! Car does start, run, and move! Has new tires, extra parts including original style front buckets, new upholstry for front and rear seats, carb parts. Have original XL hubcaps along with original style 63 dog dishes and set of later model dishes and rings (pictured).
