The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb became the venue of a record-setting feat by the Mercedes-Benz C250 D 4Matic, as shown on a report from carscoops.com. Behind the wheel of the luxury sedan was Uwe Nittel, who guided the near-production vehicle through the route that had over 150 bends and located at an altitude of 1,524 meters or nearly 5,000 feet.
The C250 D completed the 12.4-mile or 19.9-kilometer course within 11 minutes and 22 seconds. It broke the 2007 record of 14 minutes and 3.3 seconds, which was set by the Volkswagen Golf TDI. Nittel revealed that driving the series-production diesel sedan featuring an automatic transmission through the Pikes Peak course may seem crazy to some people, but it was fun to do. The feat shows the irrelevance of preconceived notions about diesel engines.
The Mercedes-Benz C250 D 4Matic comes with a four-cylinder 2.1-liter diesel engine with a power output of 201HP and a torque of 368 lb-ft. It also features a 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission along with a 4Matic all-wheel drive system that facilitates its acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h within 6.9 seconds. The top speed of the luxury sedan is 240 km/h or 149 mph.
The interior of the C250 D was disassembled, which is standard for race cars. Modifications were also made to meet safety regulations, including the installation of a rollover cage, a fire extinguishing system, racing tank, improved brake system, and ultra high-performance tires. The engine remained untouched while the emission control system of the Mercedes-Benz C250 D is the first diesel-powered luxury sedan to surpass the US ULEV emissions standards. The combined 6.9 l/100 km or 34 mpg rating of the luxury vehicle makes it better than most hybrid vehicles available in the US market.
Daimler AG management board member Thomas Weber said the testing program of Mercedes-Benz is among the most rigorous within the industry due its extensive simulations and tough durability evaluations performed in different test sites across the globe. Weber added that the standards were raised at Pikes Peak and the series-production Mercedes-Benz C250 D 4Matic demonstrated the combination of clean exhaust technology and sporty performance in a single luxury vehicle.
