How to Start Your Vehicle if the Engine Floods

What to do if your engine floods

Some things you just don’t think will happen to you and your vehicle. You’ve heard about other people having problems, but you don’t’ necessarily think it will happen to you….that is of course, until it does. So what do you do if your engine floods? Here at Briggs Kia, our service team has handled a wide variety of problems, including a flooded engine, so we encourage drivers to stop in and entrust your vehicle in the hands of our qualified and expert team; otherwise, try following these steps:

How does an engine flood?

This is a problem that is typically seen with vehicles during extreme temperatures or if a driver pumps the gas too hard and too often. So how exactly does it happen? After starting up your vehicle, punching the gas too hard or pumping the accelerator can send an excess of fuel to the engine, causing it to flood. In the case of an older vehicle, this can actually cause the carburetor to flood.

When you put the key in the ignition and try to start ‘er up, you’ll hear that it is unable to turn over or is completely dead, this could be a strong indicator. Another large indicator is the strong smell of gasoline coming from your vehicle.

Tips for starting an engine that is flooded

If the car won’t start, you’ll need to give it a rest rather trying to repeatedly start it up. By leaving it alone for a couple of minutes, approximately 20, the gas has hopefully had enough time to evaporate.

Once you’ve finished, not so patiently waiting, get back in your car and press your foot down on the accelerator. Next, try turning the key to start it back up. Hopefully it will start, but if it does not, leave the key still in the on position while the accelerator pedal is still pressed down. Don’t pump the pedal, the hope is that the engine will finally catch and start back up. Don’t do this for too long or else your engine will flood again.

If it does start back up, drive it around a little bit so it will start up again the next time that you need it. In the event that your vehicle is still being stubborn, you’ll want to wait even longer, try again, and if it still does not work, you’ll have to seek professional help.
