Spectators on the sky ride got a great view of some Pittsburgh-based GM muscle—this 1964 Impala and 1970 4-4-2. Photos by author.
The Goodguys PPG Nationals rolled into the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus for three days of showing and racing from July 10th to the 12th. The variety of vehicles that participated in this event was staggering. From grassroots rat rods to the latest in high-tech builds of vintage rides, and all the muscle cars, pickup trucks, station wagons, street machines, auto crossers, Pro-Tourers, drag racers, Pro-Streeters, hot rods and other classifications I forgot to mention, in between.
Eight-time Pikes Peak International Hillclimb winner, Robby Unser, son of Bobby Unser and cousin of Al Unser Jr., drove the Speedway Motors Nova quite aggressively in the autocross, as evidenced by its front inside tire leaving the pavement on a few turns.
Along with the massive car show, there was a manufacturers’ midway featuring the newest parts, a swap meet for vintage parts, an autocross and a drag race. There was also a poker run, parties and live music, not to mention seminars.
The street rod, 1970 Pro-Street Ford and the stock 1969 Pontiac Judge offer a glimpse at the variety of car genres that were represented.
The Craftsman Comet, which will be familiar to Hemmings Daily, Hemmings Blog and Hemmings Muscle Machines readers, participated in the autocross.
Two-time Indy 500 winner, Al Unser Jr. pilots the Speedway Motors Camaro through the cones on the autocross.
By Sunday morning, it felt like the Hemmings staff had walked about 50 miles to take in all the cars and displays that this event offered. Here are some photos from the 18th Goodguys PPG Nationals.
